Delilah was born on January 17, 1933 in the Egyptian capital Cairo, the largest city in the Arab world, but Delilah was Italian by birth. As a child, the girl underwent surgery due to an infection in her eyes, but the operation was not very successful, as a result of which Delilah got a squint, in addition, she could not be in the dark and slept in the light.

True, these problems did not prevent the future singer, already in 1951 she took part in the Miss Ondine contest, in which she took second place, and three years later Delilah became the winner of the Miss Egypt beauty contest!

A year before, Delilah underwent an operation that helps get rid of strabismus, from that moment on, success begins to come to her. After winning the Miss Egypt contest, Yolanda becomes Delilah. You haven't forgotten that her real name is Yolanda Cristina Gigllotti.

Name change is of great importance in the lives of some people. For example, when people accept monasticism, they change their name, which symbolizes that the old person has died, and a new one is born in his place, with new qualities. Many show business stars, writers, poets do the same - at a certain stage of their career they take a new name, under which they start a new life.

The singer took her new name Delilah in honor of the heroine of the biblical parable "Samson and Delilah". At the same time, she received an offer to act in films and, since 1954, Delilah has starred in small roles in the films "The Mask of Tutankhamun" and "Glass and Cigarette".

For the film "Glass and Cigarette" she records her first song "Black Moon" (La luna negra).

Events are developing faster and faster, life is changing before our eyes, at the very end of 1954 Delilah moved to Paris.

Paris will become the main city in her life, but at first this city did not immediately accept Delilah.

Initially, she had problems, because the future famous singer did not know French perfectly. Therefore, she could not prove herself as an actress and decided to become a singer. The first performances took place at the Villa d'Este club, where she performed songs in Italian, French and Spanish. There she meets the writer and screenwriter Albert Machar, who gives advice to change the name again in order to be successful.

It was then that the singer changes the letter in her name, replacing "l" with "d", as a result Delilah became Delilah.

This was followed by more and more performances and competitions, the singer was noticed on radio stations and record companies and offers followed that opened up new horizons. And in 1956 Delilah recorded her first hit Bambino and signed her first contract with Barclay.

During the year, 300,000 copies of records with the song "Bambino" were sold, and Delilah received her first Golden Disc. But the singer did not stop there, she continued to create and multiply hits, concerts and albums, thanks to which Delilah is achieving real success. The singer has received many music awards, and her name and photos have been on the covers of magazines. She is touring France and Europe.

And in 1958, Delilah performed in America, where she received an offer to stay in order to become an American singer, but she refused.

Delilah returns to her native Cairo, returns in triumph. At that moment, she probably felt the happiest, because in a short time she managed to become from an unknown girl suffering from strabismus to a world famous singer.

Then the singer returns to Paris, records new musical compositions and discs, gives concerts, receives awards. It is difficult to calculate how many songs Delilah sang, a rare singer can dream of her success. Delilah sang over 500 songs in French, about 200 songs in her native Italian and over 200 songs in 8 other languages ​​- German, Arabic, English, Spanish, Japanese, Hebrew, Greek, Flemish. More than 150 million discs have been sold worldwide.

Dalida's popularity and influence were so high that, as a result of a 1982 poll conducted in France, the singer was put on the 2nd place in the list of the most influential women, in the first place was the wife of the President of France.

Later in 2008, the French scientific publication Encyclopaedia Universalis conducted a survey to identify the most influential individuals in contemporary French society as a whole. Delilah took second place according to the results of voting, losing only Charles de Gaulle.

Delilah was at the height of fame, she had everything that millions can only dream of! Delilah had admirers and admirers, her portraits graced the covers of magazines, she was a welcome guest at the most luxurious events, and much, much more had Delilah.

Only by devoting herself to the singer's career, she did not calculate something, did not take into account something, and her personal life did not go well. And the illness of childhood also made itself felt - the singer's eyes tolerated the light of bright lanterns and searchlights that illuminated her at concerts worse and worse. In addition to the pain from the bright light, Delilah experienced mental pain, feeling lonely, because, despite all her successes, she could not get elementary female happiness - Delilah had neither a husband nor children, from which she more and more felt herself lonely and unhappy.

Despite the sad depressive mood, the singer continued her creative activity, she appeared on television, gave concerts, held meetings with her fans, studied scripts and did not show how she was dissatisfied with life, because she is a star, and the star is simply obliged to shine to the whole world. Shine as much as you have enough strength - to the last!

In early May 1987, Delilah realized that she could no longer continue life, which, according to her, had become unbearable. The singer wrote in her note - “Life has become unbearable for me. Forgive me". On the night of the second to the third of May, Delilah took a large dose of sleeping pills and washed down with alcohol.

Her heart stopped on May 3 at about 11 am, Delilah died in a graceful pose, clutching a glass in her hands. She was buried on May 7 at the Montmartre cemetery, almost all of Paris came to say goodbye to the singer.

And journalists, who shortly before his death wrote all sorts of barbs and unfounded criticism about Delilah, began to write laudatory publications, extol Delilah and her musical compositions, calling Delilah's songs art of the highest standard.
