Dresses of the 20s

The 1920s are the time of jazz and cinema, designers, artists and poets, the time of technical advances, airplanes and cars, radio and gramophones. The First World War is over. Women strengthened their independence, because all the years of the war they had to replace men not only in the family, but also in the workplace. And now they do not give up their positions acquired during the war, and defend their rights.

Women have become more confident, they have a desire to be not only the keeper of the family hearth, but also to receive education on an equal basis with men, master prestigious professions, drive a car, play sports, and fly airplanes. And at the same time, women of the 20s spend a lot of time in entertainment, smoking cigarettes, dancing the Charleston all night long, because all the troubles are left behind, and there is still a lot to be done in this life to catch up. And so they lived to the limit, and on such a scale, as if they were living out their last days.

The appearance of a woman is also changing. The appearance of a woman reflected that long-awaited freedom for which a woman had fought for many years - to live on a par with men. Is it possible to recognize in this "cutie" in a short dress, with a boy's haircut and brightly painted lips, that old woman ... Thinness has become fashionable - a boyish figure, small breasts, boyish hairstyles.

And so, what did these liberated women wear? First of all, they got rid of the corset, put on short dresses in a straight free cut and low waist. The length of the dresses is mainly above the knee, but it can be up to the ankle. The simplicity of the cut, the free silhouette, as it were, emphasized the woman's desire to say that she is free. But still, it is natural for a woman to decorate herself. And no matter how hard Coco Chanel tried to completely free a woman, all her inventions could not exist without those "excesses" that a woman always needed. The simplicity of the cut was compensated by the abundance of decor. Dresses were decorated with beads, sequins and fringes, flowers, sequins, embroidery and flounces.

Silk, satin, velvet, pleated or corrugated fabrics are the most popular. It is these fabrics with the simplest cut that will create luxury. Transparent fabrics were combined with matte ones. In the 1920s, the Art Deco style was born, which combined abstractionism, cubism, eclecticism. During these years, interest in the oriental, bright and unusual returned again. Sergei Diaghilev's Russian ballet seasons in the 10s excited the whole of Paris. The enthusiastic attitude towards Russian painters and artists sparked a keen interest in new colors and shapes. The luxurious costumes of Russian ballerinas were amazing. And all this resulted in those elements and motives that appeared in the outfits of fashionistas. One of the first to succumb to the spell of the Russian seasons was the trendsetter of Parisian fashion in the 10s, Paul Poiret.

Further Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Edouard Moline, Jean Patou and many other designers caught this interest, and with their help there were outfits that allowed to show the world the luxury and dazzle of their owners.
