At the beginning of the 90s of the XIX century, a new style emerged - Art Nouveau, in which interest in various historical styles was expressed: empire, gothic and oriental cultures. The style of art that emerged in the early 90s and gradually changed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries was called "modern" in Russia, "Art Nouveau" in France, "Jugendstil" in Germany, "secession" in Austria, and in Italy - "liberty".

The fashion of the early 90s was marked by the transformation of the bustle, which had dominated the women's wardrobe for many years.

In the early 90s, the skirt, beautifully hugging the hips, drops to the floor and looks like a bell. The entire female figure acquires harmony and rushes upward, natural proportions prevail. The silhouette reveals all the virtues of the female figure. During this period, tailors felt like sculptors. The composition of the suit is built with accents vertically, the silhouette has an accentuated waist, a narrow bodice with a stand-up collar, the shoulder line is raised, the sleeve is cut in the shape of a small "leg", along the edge with folds in the center of the shoulder, the skirt narrowed in front is widened at the back.

Evening dresses were often made without sleeves, with a deep neckline. Instead of sleeves, a light drape was created from fabric or lace, artificial flowers or feathers. The wasp waist suggested the obligatory wearing of a corset.

This decade has changed the style of women who are passionate about sports and travel, as well as those who started working. Clothing has changed in many ways. In those years, drawings of a tall and slender girl with a magnificent hairstyle began to appear in print, her image attracted attention with its freshness and charm. She was called "Gibson's girlfriend." (Gibson is the artist who created this image - 1890-1910).

The girl is depicted in a strict blouse and a long flared skirt, she does not wear expensive hats, she is wearing a straw boater. The image of the girl personified an active woman who went in for sports, a bicycle was especially her favorite. When riding a bicycle, a girl wears a cropped wide skirt or harem pants, which were called "bloomers". The popularity of Gibson's girlfriend helped imitate her costumes and advertisements for fabrics and shoes. It was at this time that the fashion spread for a suit, a combination of a skirt with a blouse, or "three-piece" - a skirt, blouse and jacket or bolero, as well as for sportswear.

In the first half of the 90s, manuals for self-tailoring began to appear with many technological tips. These manuals are noted by modern masters as high quality. In the same years, some items of men's wardrobe were gradually included in the women's - for example, jackets with a cut for a man's model - a tailcoat type with a vest, jackets and jackets for men for cycling or for riding.

The Amazon costume included a high-collar shirt, a men's jacket, and even a top hat.

To soften the male image, women used fur boas, muffs and capes. Capes are sewn from fabrics according to the season - wool, lace, silk. They are worn with dresses, suits, or coats. Hats in the early 90s were with small brim, decorated with feathers or ribbons, which visually elevated the figure.

Rich women did not strive for the restraint of a male image, for them the luxury of fabrics, an abundance of decor and ornaments were more understandable. Princess Alexandra, the future Queen of England, adored jewelry and, on occasion, always showed them on herself.It was she who introduced into fashion the so-called "dog collar", consisting of pearl threads wrapped in several rows around the neck and descending to the chest with two threads. So before the star of Coco Chanel shone, there were big changes in fashion that marked the beginning of the discoveries and inventions of the famous Mademoiselle.
