Musk and musky aromas in perfumery

Musk is one of the most popular components of perfumery aromas, it is divided into three main types - musk of animal origin, vegetable and synthesized.

Musk of animal origin.

Musk secretion is produced in the glands of males of animals such as deer, roe deer, beaver, musk ox, desman. Musk is similar to honey, but the scent is strong, pungent and persistent. Males need this substance to mark their territory. But the most important ingredient in musk is the macrocyclic ketone muscone. Until 1979, deer were exterminated for the sake of musk extraction. To get 1 kg of musk, they killed up to fifty deer. Basically, the extermination of these animals took place in Tibet, the Himalayas, Sakhalin, and Korea. In the 80s, the musk deer was taken under protection. It was included in the International Red Book and the Red Book of Russia. True, back in the 50s, farms appeared in Arabia for growing deer, and they did not need to be killed or injured to get musk.

Vegetable musk.

Nowadays, plant-based musk is used more and more.
It is obtained from galbanum, hibiscus seeds and ambrette.

Synthetic musk.

In 1888, synthetic musk, or nitroglycerine musk, was invented. The chemist, who put all his efforts and knowledge, called him by his name Musk Bayer. And then new discoveries followed and new types of synthetic musk were obtained. However, later chemists proved the toxicity of nitroglycerin musks and, therefore, harmful to both health and the environment.
The harmful ingredient was replaced, and new musks began to be used in perfume compositions - fantolide, galaxolid and many others.

Perfumer Jerom Epinette and Byredo Creative Director Ben Gorham co-designed this fragrance for Ben's friend. But many girls liked him. Top notes are aldehydes, rose and pink pepper. The middle notes are aromas of peonies, jasmine, violets, and the base notes are musk and woody notes.

Etro, Musk
This fragrance conjures up the beauties of the East, top notes are bergamot, verbena, and grapefruit, middle notes are cedar and guaiac wood, base notes are musk and Indian sandalwood.
