Charoite is a beautiful stone found for the first time in Yakutia in the mid 40s of the last century. He received recognition only in 1974. It seems to many in its name that the stone is associated with enchantment, magic, especially since its mystical color is a purple haze with silvery patterns reminiscent of distant galaxies and nebulae in the starry sky.

Charoite is a rare stone, its formula is К (Ca, Na) 2Si4O10 (OH, F) H2O, hardness - 5.0 - 6.0, density - 2.54 g / cm3. The stone is translucent. The fine grain texture and inclusions of other minerals such as yellow tinaxite and green aegirine give the stone a special charm.


In fact, it got its name from the name of its deposit - near the Chara River, lost in the forests of Yakutia and shrouded in a gray fog. This is the only place in the world where charoite is mined. At that time, a young girl-geologist Vera Rogova became its discoverer. It was she who gave it its name, but it took more than 10 years of study for the stone to finally acquire the status of an independent mineral, although it still bears mysteries.

The unique stone has lilac, purple, pink and silver tints, and only up to 100 shades of the named flowers - from delicate violet petals to a frosty winter night. There are inclusions that contain golden colors. The color is mainly determined by manganese impurities. When polishing the stone, an iridescent pattern appears on the surface, which consists of veins of different shades.


There are charoites with the effect of a cat's eye, "landscape", with patterns of the starry sky. The stone retains its beautiful lilac-violet color even when melted. In addition, it can also be enhanced by radiation.

The stone got its name from the name of the river, but, apparently, a special mystery lurks in the river, because our ancestors have always noticed everything created by nature on the basis of long-term observations. Small polished crystals can cost anywhere from $ 2 or more per carat. A kilogram of raw charoite costs about $ 100 on average.A small stone in a ring or pendant - about 20-30 dollars, the cost of a vase, depending on the height - from 10 thousand dollars or more.


In charoite, inclusions with increased radioactivity are sometimes found, since uranium-containing minerals are found near the deposit. This happens, but rarely, however, such stones cannot be used in products, before they are checked for radioactivity. And, therefore, in questionable places, you should not buy charoite for a low price.


Sometimes, instead of charoite, there are imitations of tinted opaque chalcedony, moreover, of high quality, which is difficult for a non-specialist to distinguish from natural charoite. If you decide to buy, pay attention to the fact that natural charoite always contains gray, greenish or brown inclusions, and also has microcracks. And one more feature - natural charoite has silvery overflows, this does not happen in fakes. There are also fakes made of ceramics - they, as a rule, have a low price.
