Jewelry history

The ring appeared in "roaring twenties". Just imagine, there have been major changes in society that have given women more freedom, including the right to vote. Expressive of the spirit of that time - flappers - emancipated young girls who stopped wearing corsets, cut off long braids, raised the length of the hem to the knee, working and independent.

They wanted to show their independence in every way: they smoked, drank alcohol, went to bars without a male escort. And then Prohibition in America! Al Capone, hunting for bootleggers, banning the sale of alcohol. In general, alcohol from a drink has become a luxury, an indicator of belonging to a secret society. Getting to a private cocktail party was the dream of every flapper girl.

It was then that the cocktail ring appeared - an adornment with a huge, most often semi-precious, stone. It reported two facts about its owner. First, she is independent and can buy herself an expensive ring. Why? Cocktail rings were called the antithesis of wedding rings. The first were worn on the opposite hand (in Western countries, a wedding ring on the left, a cocktail ring on the right), on the index or middle finger.

Secondly, such a girl directly said: “Let's have a drink". The massive decoration on the hand with which you take the glass attracted attention to alcohol and, thanks to the reflection from the liquid, shimmered especially brightly.

The second surge in the popularity of the cocktail ring happened in the 50s and 60s. It lost its revolutionary strength and challenge, but remained the only ring with a stone that can be worn until 6 pm.

How to wear a cocktail ring

Cocktail ring - a massive ring with a precious or semi-precious stone weighing at least 3 carats. Options for rings with enamels and many small stones are possible. Recently, rings of half a finger and even larger have become popular. Don't be intimidated by the size of the jewelry. Cocktail rings are a case when you can afford a huge stone or decorative element, and it will not look vulgar.

1. According to the rules of jewelry etiquette, cocktail rings can only be worn on the middle or index finger of the right hand.

2. Remember: a massive ring with a wide stone will look rough on thin fingers.

3. Oval, elongated or asymmetrical stones will fit any hand and will look graceful.

4. If earlier rings were worn exclusively with dresses in the evening, now they are appropriate during the day. Today they can even be paired with jeans and plain T-shirts. A cocktail ring is an accessory that can subdue the whole image and become the main accent, so do not overload the image with other jewelry.
