Basque in clothes: fashion trend

A peplum is a romantic detail that can transform the simplest model of a dress, skirt, blouse, jacket, coat and even trousers.

If you remember the history of the Basque, then you can be sure that this detail in clothes appeared a long time ago. And today, in fashion shows of almost every season, the basque is found in the collections of many designers. A peplum is a wide frill or flounce that is sewn along the waistline to the bodice of a dress or blouse, as well as a skirt or trousers.

This element, decorating clothes, began to gain its popularity even in the costumes of Ancient Greece, when tunics and chitons were skillfully draped in women's dresses, forming a semblance of a modern peplum.

Then the basque became an element of the male costume of medieval Europe. But she got the name, thanks to her popularity in the national costumes of the Basques. The Basque Country is a region that covers part of northern Spain and southwestern France. Separated by the two states, the Basques retain their individuality and are considered one of the most mysterious peoples in their origin.

Fashionable looks with a peplum

Basque becomes a topical element in clothing in Victorian era... It was at this time that crinolines were replaced by a basque, which created splendor, and above all, of the hips. This was followed by changes again, which changed the images and contributed to the emergence of new ideas and silhouettes.

In the 20s - 30s of the twentieth century, clothes with a basque were worn by Don Cossacks - both young women and unmarried girls (however, no importance was attached to its name then). This style emphasized the beauty of the figure, and as you know, the Cossack women were always famous for their beauty and article, and knew how to emphasize it.

In the 40s of the last century, the Basque returned. This detail in clothes appeared gradually. During wartime, the silhouette changed, and the peplum, as we know today, appeared mainly in jackets, emphasizing the thin waist of the woman.

In 1947, in his collection new look Christian Dior also drew attention to this feminine element.

Cristobal Balenciaga was from the Spanish Basques, and, probably, to emphasize his origin, he often used this element in his models. In the 50s, he introduced jackets with a peplum and a voluminous back in his collection.

Later, this detail occasionally appeared on the catwalks. In the 70s, Yves Saint Laurent used it in his models. And then they rarely remembered her again. But in 2013, almost all the designers in their collections decided to return the basque and its former popularity.

Since then, there are peplum looks in every season.

How to wear a peplum dress correctly?

Basque can be used by every woman. But ... you should choose the most suitable option. For those who have an ideal figure, a peplum of any shape is suitable - both lush and with a smooth, restrained cut. For women with a curvaceous figureof course, it is better to choose a peplum that is strict in shape, which will not create volume in the hips. Basque always draws attention to itself, so you need to choose it individually and carefully.

In modern fashion, the basque is made of different lengths and volumes; it may differ in texture and color from the main product. But regardless of the image and style, the Basque will always give the owner femininity, romance and charm.
