Dry skin and dehydrated skin: what's the difference

You, of course, remember that proper skin care is necessary, and for this you need to know exactly what skin problems have arisen and what is their cause. Let's, for example, learn to distinguish dry skin from dehydration, because in both cases, different skin care will be required. And if the problem is correctly identified, the selected cosmetics will definitely help you.

Dry skin and dehydrated

Dry skin

What does it mean - dry skin. Yes, this is the type of skin. Dryness is most often due to genetics, which cannot be changed yet. Sometimes, but less often, dryness can result from the use of cosmetics with retinoids or acids. With a lack of linolenic acid, the synthesis of ceramides suffers and the lipid layer of the stratum corneum loses its integrity. Hence, there is dry skin and associated peeling, increased sensitivity, irritation, etc.

Application moisturizers with a damaged lipid layer, it may not give positive results. Yes, they relieve the sensation of dryness and increase the moisture content in the stratum corneum, but they also need funds that will restore the damaged barrier. Dry skin needs not only moisturizers, but also means that restore the lipid layer, that is, lipid nutrition, and these are ceramides, oils, squalane.

Dry skin and dehydrated

Dehydration of the skin

Dehydration is a temporary skin condition and can be remedied. Such skin feels only a lack of moisture, but not lipids. The most common cause of dehydration can be the use of improperly selected cosmetics or dry air in the apartment / office (most often this happens in winter during the heating season).

Contaminated or frosty air, wind outside, excess UV rays, unhealthy diet, too aggressive cleansers, smoking, alcohol, coffee ... - all of these can also cause a lack of moisture in the skin. And it should be noted that dehydration is possible with any type of skin. Oily skin can be affected by this condition as well as other skin types. She reacts to a lack of moisture with an increased release of sebum, "assuming" that it will save her, and therefore begins to shine even more.

With age, the production of hyaluronic acid decreases, which is why the skin loses moisture for this reason. General dehydration of the body is also possible in the case of various diseases.

Dry and dehydrated skin: what's the difference and what to do

How can you tell if it's dry or dehydrated?

On dry skin, inflammation is less common. Pores are invisible on it, while on dehydrated pores can be enlarged, this applies to combination and oily skin. Dehydrated skin most often has a dull color and uneven relief, as it does not get rid of dead cells well.

Dry skin feels tight throughout the day, while dehydrated skin does not respond well to washing with water, and it also feels tight. With a strong degree of dehydration, small wrinkles appear almost all over the face, but they can disappear immediately after applying the cream.

The care of skin that has lost moisture or is simply dry is different. In the first case, you only need moisturizing cosmetics and sometimes nourishing, and in the second - both moisturizing and helping to protect the lipid layer. But they should be discussed for each case separately.
