Fashionable clothes and hairstyles in the 1990s

“Be yourself” is the fashion slogan of the last decade of the twentieth century. In the 90s, this slogan was used in advertising for Hugo Boss perfumery, as well as in an advertising campaign for the Calvin Klein brand. People, on the one hand, strove for individuality, and on the other, they tended to flaunt brand names. At the same time, in the 1990s, convenience was appreciated as never before, but at the same time, colorfulness and even a kind of theatricality were in fashion. Fashion in the 1990s was dictated by both show business stars and supermodels.

1990s Troubled Fashion

Clothing styles and accessories in the 1990s
Grunge - a style that appeared as an anti-fashion, but later, having penetrated the catwalks, became a fashion. The grunge style is ripped jeans, sneakers, leather jackets, sweatshirts with outstretched elbows, massive heavy boots, in the women's version - oversized sweaters and baggy men's trousers. On the catwalk in the 90s, the grunge style was represented, for example, by such a designer as Marc Jacobs. He released a collection of asymmetrical faded T-shirts, wrinkled dresses, deliberately sloppy sweaters and plaid shirts. Used the grunge style in their collections and fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood.

Minimalism - simplicity of shapes and colors. Collections in the spirit of minimalism in the 1990s were released by Calvin Klein, Donna Karan. Minimalism in the street fashion of the 1990s is the almost complete absence of accessories, simple jackets, white T-shirts and tops, skinny jeans. Minimalism is the image of Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct.

Influence of electronic dance music on fashion (rave) - shoes on a huge platform, T-shirts with psychedelic prints, bright acid colors, micromini, completely crazy hair and makeup. Recall, for example, the image of Leela from The Fifth Element by Luc Besson.

Sporty chic - the main element of the wardrobe are leggings (then they were called leggings), which are combined with shiny T-shirts, sneakers on a high platform, and sometimes dresses and skirts were worn over them. Clothes in the style of sporty chic are also oversized jackets, jackets, shirts, tops that open the belly, which could be worn with jeans or with high-waisted skirts.

In the 1990s, ethnic motifs in clothing were also in vogue - Chinese, Japanese, Indian, as well as an interest in eco-clothing (the use of natural materials, tailoring of outfits converted from old clothes, and so on).

As for Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union, the fashion of the 1990s in them was distinguished by its brightness and excessiveness. So, in the 90s they wore a lot of denim clothes - denim jackets, skirts, overalls, sundresses, that is, anything from comfortable denim.

In addition to denim clothes, they wore, of course, leggings, leggings of the brightest colors. Leather clothes were also in fashion - leather skirts (mini-skirts were considered especially fashionable) and, of course, jackets. Another fashion hit of the 1990s in the post-Soviet space is tracksuits that were worn far from the gym.

Tracksuits were worn by everyone - young children, grown men and even girls could go shopping and go anywhere. A good tracksuit could cost $ 100-150, and that was a very significant amount of money in that troubled time. Therefore, the tracksuit has become a coveted piece of clothing.

In addition to convenience and value, tracksuits have become popular due to the widespread criminalization of our society. In the 1990s, boxers, wrestlers and "masters" of other martial arts gathered in communities in order to get money by all means. Very quickly they began to be considered authorities in the eyes of a significant part of society. Some were afraid of them, others wanted to be like these tough guys themselves, and many girls dreamed of marrying a bandit. All this contributed to the strengthening of the position of sports suits.

Out of outerwear, in addition to leather jackets, Bolognese jackets, soft "wrinkled" raincoats (as spring and autumn clothes) were also in fashion. In the mid-1990s, crimson jackets, ornamented sweaters, bell-bottomed trousers were in men's fashion, the latter could also be worn by girls.

1990s hairstyles - these are hairstyles with a perm, as well as with bouffants. Bangs are in fashion. Plus, the most unexpected bright hair colors were considered fashionable - hair could even be dyed blue and green. If you did not want to dye all your hair, then you could only dye some strands, and most often only bangs in red, blue and red colors. Mascara could be used as a paint. Decorated hairstyles with butterfly hairpins and colored elastic bands.

In the makeup, which is also quite bright, the accent was made on the eyes and on the lips. Lipsticks were used in red, they could have used paler shades, but at the same time in combination with a dark pencil. The colors of the shadows are bright, up to bright blue, and the more shadows, the better.

A strong tan comes into fashion, which lasts both winter and spring, because tan becomes a symbol of success. If a person can keep a tan in the middle of winter and even in spring, then he or she regularly rests on the seas and oceans.

In some cases, the passion for tanning takes perverse forms, and the girls literally live in tanning beds, thanks to which they turn into dark mulattos with platinum hair. Sometimes wonderful images turned out, but more often they were funny, although in the first and second cases, the girls did great harm to their skin and health in general.

As for Western hairstyles, in the 1990s, the main fashion trend was hairstyles from long, loose hair, raised at the roots. Other variants of hairstyles from long hair were also fashionable - the singer Madonna in the 1990s, for example, wore a “ponytail” hairstyle. However, preference was still given to short haircuts. Hairstyles from tight knots and with straight bangs, an even and smooth bob cut, a bob cut, haircuts "like a boy", hairstyles with highlights, hairstyles with tousled hair were in fashion.

Now many people condemn that time and laugh at the photographs of the 1990s, but in fact it is wrong to condemn Russia and the Russians of the nineties. It was a troubled time when the greatest empire - the USSR - collapsed! People were not adapted to a new life, and besides, the country and the people were robbed by enterprising businessmen and swindlers who privatized all promising enterprises built by the peoples of the USSR for a pittance.

Enterprises went bankrupt and sold for a pittance, other enterprises were completely ruined, so as not to take away market share from foreign competitors, and in all cases, the common people suffered in the first place. Many people in those not so distant times could not afford elementary things, for example, cook chicken soup and buy new jeans or a pair of sneakers for a child.

Despite all the difficulties, the Russians tried to dress as best they could, and it should be noted that buying new things in those days gave much more joy than now. In the 1990s, buying a leather jacket for $ 300 brought a real treat and happiness for many days and even weeks to come! Putting on a new jacket, the girls felt like queens! Everything has changed today. In 2014, in one day I bought 2 leather jackets - a black and a red one, and a little later, a blue jacket, and it didn’t turn me into a queen and didn’t even give me the feeling of a holiday.

Everything that girls could have dreamed about in the 1990s and not even dreamed about, today lies in my wardrobe, three fur coats, two sheepskin coats, 5 leather jackets, many boxes of shoes, shelves littered with bags and much more. At the same time, we have forgotten the catastrophic difficulties of the 1990s and are facing the current crisis with whining, although in reality - I and many other girls simply no longer know what else can be bought, what we lack for happiness ...
