In Soviet times, the choice of dolls was limited, so the Barbie doll was the dream of many girls. If we look even further into the past - at the beginning of the 20th century and earlier, then the dolls were even more expensive.

The girls had 1 favorite doll, which they changed and took very good care of. A rare girl had 2 or more dolls, most often one doll was bought for a child, and the second and third dolls were old, they were inherited from an older sister, mother and even grandmother. It wasn't until after World War II that doll manufacturers mastered plastics and began mass production of affordable dolls.
