The history of the Payot cosmetics brand


Dr. Nadia Payo is the founder of the PAYOT cosmetics brand. Nadia Rasha was born in 1887 in the city of Odessa. The family in which Nadya grew up could afford everything necessary for the upbringing and education of her daughter. Nadia was raised by French and German tutors who taught the girl the sciences necessary for a young girl of that time.

From an early age, Nadia dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, in Russia there was no such opportunity, since women did not have access to university education. Therefore, in 1907, Nadia went to Switzerland, to Lausanne, where he entered the medical faculty. Six years later, her cherished dream came true - Nadia graduated from the medical faculty. Becoming a female doctor at that time was considered an extremely rare and unusual phenomenon.

In 1913 year, at the end of her studies, Nadia met her future husband, Edmond Payot, who was also finishing his studies, but at the Polytechnic Institute. They got married that same year and soon moved to Buenos Aires. Here Nadia started working as a volunteer in local hospitals and shelters. She helped those who could not pay for medical services. The couple lived in Argentina for 4 years.

They then moved to New York. It was here that she decided on the choice of direction in her profession. The young woman was attracted to the world of beauty. Nadia's choice was prompted by a meeting with the outstanding Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. Nadia noted how trained and in excellent shape ballerina body different from the condition of her face. She was surprised and upset at the same time. Pavlova's face was tired, emaciated and betrayed her age (the ballerina was 38 years old at that time).

Nadia, as a doctor, understood and concluded how important it is to stimulate the muscles of not only the body, but also the face. And she wanted to convey her knowledge and experience to all women, or at least to those who wish to preserve their youth for many years. After all, it is not at all necessary to preserve beauty only for someone, many women want this for themselves, so that after looking in the mirror, they will not be horrified by what they see ...

In 1920 year, the Payot couple moved to Paris, where they had a son. And here Nadia continued to master her profession, but with a specific goal - to create skin care products using new biotechnologies. She also started developing special exercises for the face and methods of applying cosmetics. Her first cosmetics for face and body care appeared in 1920.

Nadia worked in collaboration with homeopaths, thanks to whom she learned a lot of new and useful things from the plant world. Therefore, among the first ingredients were extracts of corn, licorice, sesame, thyme and lavender essential oils. All components were exclusively natural. Soon she began to create medicinal mixtures, resulting in such legendary products as Golden Rays, Nutricia, Pâte Grise.

The first Payot salon opened in 1925 year in Paris, which quickly gained popularity. The number of clients in a short time increased so much that Dr. Payo had to open a new salon. It was (and is today) on rue Castiglione, building 10. Here Nadia Payo taught her beauticians various techniques of care, many of which, one might say, were ahead of that time.

For the first time, the salon began to do such procedures as rejuvenating thermal baths (modern wraps), baths to combat cellulite (chromotherapy), Charcot massage shower (balneotherapy), electric massages (iontophoresis), manual massage, paraffin baths for weight loss. The clients were offered depilation and electrocoagulation services to eliminate the vascular network.

In 1933 year Dr. Payo published a book "The art of being beautiful", in which she introduced readers to her philosophy of beauty... After a while, she continued her writing work - a book called "The Book of Beauty" was published. Both books have won the approval of many prominent doctors of the time.

What cosmetologists so often repeat today - cleansing, toning, nutrition, were the basic rules of care in Payo's salon. At the same time, the doctor continued to develop massage and gymnastics techniques for the face.

The beauty salon on rue di Castiglione opened the world of beauty and harmony to its clients. There was everything that attracts a woman so much: subtle aromas, delicate texture in exquisite jars and bottles, the whole room was decorated with vases with purple orchids (this flower became the symbol of the company). Subsequently, 4 more salons were opened. Nadia Payot became the mistress of the Empire of Beauty, which was undoubtedly popular. Of course, the elite were its visitors.

Payot products were sold in the most prestigious shops in France.

In 1947 year Dr. Payo opened a beauty school, in which she trained future cosmetologists (then they were called "lady of beauty"). The girls studied here the peculiarities of the structure of the skin, the technique of care and the psychology of the client. Nadia Payo herself initially attached great importance to psychology, believing that a cosmetologist should have insight, be able to create an atmosphere of comfort and trust for the client, and therefore the doctor carefully chose future cosmetologists among the girls.

Payot beauty salon had aesthetic care, physiotherapy and treatment departments. Nadia Payo believed that it is healthy skin that has the ability to fully breathe and eat the useful products offered by cosmetologists. To do this, she developed those 42 movements in the massage technique, which contributed to the relaxation of the skin, and therefore the maximum penetration of particles of useful elements.



Payo's company today not only cosmetics, but also a set of procedures that increase their effectiveness at times. Dr. Payo was the first among all renowned cosmetologists to suggest choosing products according to skin type. The clients of the salon were not only offered procedures, but they were also taught how to take care of the skin of the body and face.

Dr. Payot attached great importance to makeup, realizing how important her appearance is to a woman. Therefore, she also used medicinal components in decorative cosmetics products. Turning to the psychology and philosophy of life, she was more than once convinced that beauty can be gained not only by stimulating the muscles of the face and body, but also by creating harmony of body and soul in oneself.

It was about the soul that Nadya thought, whose beauty, no less clearly than the health of the body, leaves an imprint on the faces of people.

“I was busy with my body for a long time, until the day came when I realized that I had to take care of my soul,” she said. "Everything is interconnected and the destruction of one part of the body inevitably entails the destruction of the rest."

In the 1950s, Nadia Payo sold the company to Joseph Alexander and retired. She spent the last years of her life in Switzerland at her estate Ver Clos. Dr. Payo died in December 1966.
