Where does the name sweatshirt come from? The most common opinion is that the sweatshirt got its name because of the density of the material, but in fact this is not true. The sweatshirt is the favorite clothing of Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy and his followers, the so-called heretics - Tolstoyans.

Initially, the sweatshirt had little in common with modern sweaters with zippers. It was a long, spacious men's blouse, worn with a belt outside and resembling a traditional Russian peasant shirt. Leo Tolstoy all his life strove to be closer to the common people, so he chose a slightly improved peasant blouse as his clothing.

Tolstoy himself did not name the sweatshirt. The sweatshirt owes its name and widespread use to its fanatical followers - the Tolstoyans, who cultivated absolutely everything connected with their great ideologue. Tolstoy essentially created his own teaching, his own religion, and therefore was condemned by the Orthodox Church.

Modern sweatshirts have been improved many times, and now the traditional sweatshirt is a thick knit and a zipper, which makes it more comfortable than sweaters. There are options for a sweatshirt with a hood, but it is believed that these models are more correctly called "hoodies".
