Boys were taught from a young age to serious physical exertion, brought up strength and endurance, independence and nobility. Cadets from the naval corps ran along the yards of masts like regular sailors. And in general, the military suit played a big role in shaping the appearance not only among the adult male population, but also among children, both adolescents and toddlers.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, great changes took place in children's clothing. And these changes met the necessary requirements that created conditions for the normal development of children. Until the age of seven, boys were dressed in almost the same way as girls, and in many countries and in families of different status. When the boy hit the road - into adulthood, his costume changed. He became a diminished likeness of a grown man.

Around the middle of the 19th century, a lightweight, movement-free set appeared, which included a jacket with an apache collar and cropped trousers. Of course, little fashionistas liked such a suit, and in the future it was constantly changed, adding various details and elements. In the end, a wonderful nautical suit appeared, which was liked not only by boys, but also by girls. He was destined for a long life.

In the middle of the 19th century, the aesthetic ideals of France, including painting, were formed, under the influence Empress Eugenie... Among many artists, she singled out the German portraitist François Xavier Winterhalter, who thanks to this became popular in secular society. Winterhalter painted many beautiful canvases depicting secular beauties, and not only beauties.

The artist painted a five-year-old Prince Albert in a nautical suit. And it was from that moment that the fashionable fascination with the marine theme began. Prince Albert was depicted in a white suit, the blouse of which had a blue rectangular collar, trimmed along the edge with a white border, and the trousers were flared at the bottom.

Additional elements to the suit were a neckerchief, as befits a sailor, and a boater hat. Sometimes a headdress for a naval suit was a Scottish or French beret with a pompom; the name of the ship flaunted on the ribbon around the crown.

The naval costume for girls consisted of a jacket with the same collar and a pleated skirt, and of course the same beret that adorned the children's head. Costumes on the maritime theme became popular, and since the uniforms of sailors in each country were different, the costumes of the children corresponded to their place of residence.
