Fashion photographer Tim Walker

“The very first portfolio,
which Tim brought 10 years ago,
consisted entirely of photographs of fairies in the back of his garden. "
Robin Derrick, Creative Director of English Vogue
(circa 2004).

Tim Walker is one of the most famous fashion photographers. His photographs are calm, there is no exuberant brightness in them, but the equally exuberant spirit of surrealism is invariably felt in them. And Tim Walker's works are original, a little cynical and, of course, prone to grotesque. He undoubtedly has his own handwriting, and the understanding that every photographer simply must be recognizable, have this very own handwriting. Tim Walker may be indebted to Richard Avedon, with whom he worked and, of course, studied with, but despite this, their work is completely different.

Tim Walker was born in 1970 in the UK. Graduated from Exter Art College with a degree in graphic design. Then he worked as an assistant for various photographers, comprehending all the subtleties of photography. The most significant influence and, of course, the impression on him was made by the work of Cecil Beaton: he first saw them while working, somewhere in the early 1990s, as a trainee in the archives of British Vogue, namely when he was instructed to compile a catalog of negatives of these same works.

After practicing in the archives, Tim Walker, with the support of Lucinda Chambers, Vogue Fashion Director, and Arthur Elgort, embarks on a career as a photographer. He works and interns with great masters, one of whom is the aforementioned Richard Avedon. Tim Walker himself wrote about working with him: "I was not the best assistant." Indeed, once he simply dropped the great master. The duties of assistant Richard Avedon included cleaning the workshop, opening and closing the studio, as well as helping the master himself, Richard Avedon, who loves to sit in Turkish, to get to his feet. “I picked it up, and then for some reason released it too early, and it fell,” Tim Walker recalled and Richard Avedon "I just got mad in front of forty people." After this incident, Tim Walker finally decides to work independently.

But this does not prevent him from following the rules of Richard Avedon, for example, this advice: “Never think too much. Do everything quickly and explain later. "

Today, Tim Walker's photos appear on the pages of such magazines as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, W. His photo session with Madonna, which was held in a mansion located in Wiltshire, by the way, once belonged to Cecilia Beton, also became famous. The photo shoot was done for American Vogue. And in 2004, on the pages of the British Vogue, occupying 38 spreads, another photo session with Madonna took place - "Fashionable pantomime".
